Day 9 – Tahsis to Gold River
Although a relatively short ride in the grand scheme of things, there’s a some massive climbs condensed into the miles which will make for incredibly tough going. The previous day’s climbs of 16,000 ft will most likely have pummeled my legs considerably. Tahsis is at the end of an inlet wedged between mountains, I’ll be hard pressed to get out of here without some serious climbs.
30 miles into the ride things ramp up with average gradients of + 12% with some nasty 20% action to keep the legs trembling as I creak over the top at 1,935 ft near Conuma Peak. Scenery here will be amazing, jaw-dropping in fact, some consolation for the pain I will be suffering at this point!
I’ve given myself a gentle paced day to allow for the climbing and to take in the scenery. There isn’t much in Gold River, but I should get a good view of Golden Hinde, Vancouver Island’s highest peak 7,208 ft. It is also known as “The Roosters Comb” due to it’s appearance, I hope her sister mountains go easy on me in the coming days!http://ridewithgps.com/routes/3084535
